Question: What does this mean?

RBC of 6.11
MCV of 68.2
MCH of 20.6
MCHC of 30.3
RDW of 17.7

All the other numbers on my CBC, (taken last month), are within range but I got an STD panel done this week and i got a call saying the Dr needs to discuss my results. Is that ok? Also, CBC Morphology says normal but it says Microcytosis 1+ and Poikilocytosis 1+

Brief Answer:
imply iron deficiency anemia, would need hb level

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

The main aspect of a complete blood count are the hemoglobin, white cell count and platelets.

The other parts go along with or are used to back up changes in these values (hemoglobin and white cell mainly)

The rbc, mcv, mch, mchc and rdw are used along with the hemoglobin.

Low mch, mcv and mchc usually go along with a low hemoglobin. The mcv looks at the 'size of the red blood cells', the mch and mchc look at the average amount of hemoglobin in each red cell.

RDW (red cell distribution width) looks at the differences or variation in the different red blood cell sizes or volume.

Microcytosis means small red blood cell- the mcv is decreased. Microcystosis occurs when the mcv is below normal
Poilkilocytosis are abnormally shaped red blood cells

The changes suggest that you may have iron deficiency anemia but a hemoglobin value would be needed to definitely say if you are anemic and this is not included in the above results.

If the hb is low then your doctor may suggest having your iron levels checked

The cause of the iron deficiency can be determined, if it is confirmed. May be due to decreased iron in the diet, blood loss (Eg heavy periods or loss in stool etc), kidney disease, stomach ulcer

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

HB is 12.6, within range.

Would any of these numbers indicate I may have an STD? I'm asking because my Dr called to say he wants me to come in to discuss the results of my STD test. I've never had an STD but this is a new Dr so I don't know if it is just procedure.

Brief Answer:
stds would normally cause an increase in the white cell count

Detailed Answer:
Hi

No

Stds would cause an increase in the white cell count (the part of the complete blood count that looks for infection)

Please feel free to ask anything else
