What Does The Presence Of Nitrite In Urine Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 27 Jul 2016
Question: Hello,

This is a follow-up question to Dr. XXXXXXX who answered my previpus 2-3 queries.
Its been almost a week now after completion of administering prescribed antibiotic Inem (twice a day) for 8 days to address UTI (based on findings from previously shared urine test and culture reports).

Now post a week's time, per recommendationm, i got the urine sample submitted for routine urine test & culture report.

While the culture reports are awaited after 3 days, today we received the urine test report and found in the report that Nitrite is confirmed positive. Please find attachment to review the report.

Can you please advice on next steps as my father is again feeling pain while passing urine.

In case of any questions or additional details needed, please revert.

Thanks & Regards,
XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Presence of nitrite in urine suggests recent infection of urine .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up and uploading urine report .

The presence of nitrite in urine analysis is a common finding,Nitrite is produced by bacteria causing infection .However presence of nitrite in acidic urine itself kills the bacteria.

Other good finding in urine analysis is absence of plenty of pus cells which were reported in earlier tests when he had active UTI .This is sign of improvement .

The pain he has while passing urine is due to obstruction to urine flow due to enlarged prostate and not due to infection .Wait for 3 days we will review the culture report and take a call regarding next action .

He seems to be afebrile (No Fever)which is also a good sign and indicates recovery from UTI.

Thanks and Regards
.Dr.Patil. .
