What Does The Lump At Implant Site On The Fibula Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: I had a trimalleolar fracture of left ankle mid 2012. Surgery seemed to go well. I have a plate along the fibular one and a couple of pins. Only in the last week, I have had pain in a specific area - about 3 inches up the fibula from my ankle joint (where the hardware is). There is a red swollen egg like lump...not very big but sore enough to make me want to limp a bit. I was diagnosed 4 days ago with XXXXXXX River Fever and Bamah Forest Fever from infected mosquitos. 4 days the doctor also put me on my first thyroxine tablet (50mgs) as have new diagnosis of Hashimotos. What is cost of a consult now?

It's ok. I know the cost as it told me on the credit card page.

Brief Answer:
Can be related to fever.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The appearance of a red lump at the site of implant three years after the surgery is not likely to be due to an autoimmune reaction to the implant. This can happen due to a local inflammation in the area due to XXXXXXX river fever and Bamah forest fever. Such infections can cause bone pain. It is best to wait for a few days , take mild pain killers and do a hot compress in the area of the lump. The symptoms are likely to subside on their own.
I hope this answers your query.

Hello Dr, thankyou for your reply. This does put my mind at ease as I was worrying that it may be an abcess. I forgot to say that last night before bed I took at tablet called Cefaclor TAB-SR 375 MG 10. I had them in the cupboard and even though an antibiotic for bacterial infection, I thought that it might help the sore lump on my leg. Should I take any more of them? I am guessing not. I think that you advise is good. Could you advise me?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic will not help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Taking antibiotic will not help you much as it is not likely to be an abscess. You can take a pain killer and anti inflammatory. Keeping the leg raised on pillows while resting will help ion reducing the swelling.
Hope my answer is helpful.
