What Does The Following CT Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 14 Aug 2017
Question: I had a ct scan with contrast for an unrelated reason and the test showed the following
The kidneys enhance symmetrically. No hydronephrosis. There is an
approximately 1.4 cm rounded hypodense lesion in the inferior pole of the
left kidney which has density higher than simple fluid, Hounsfield
densities in the 30s. This is indeterminate and may represent a hyperdense
or complex cyst, but a solid lesion is not excluded. Suggest correlation
with a renal ultrasound.
is this something I should be worried about

Brief Answer:
A possibility of Malignancy can not be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for query.

Based on the facts that you have posted a hypodense mass detected in lower pole of left kidney is most likely to be a mass in the left kidney. This could be either a Complex Cyst or a Malignant Tumor

I'd suggest to consult qualified Urologist for clinical examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis:

1) Urine routine and culture sensitivity analysis.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) X-ray Chest
4) Renal function tests
5) Liver function tests
6) You may require to get following test to help in diagnosis and decide further management--
a) Renal Angiography
b) Fine Needle Aspiration and Core Biopsy
c) PET scan to see whether there is spread to regional lymph nodes

Hope I have answered your query, please feel free to ask if you have more questions, I shall be happy to help you.

Thanks and Regards.
Dr.Patil.
