Question: I'm an epileptic along with high Blood Pressure. I have been on medication for 2 yrs now. I was on Epsolin 100mg (3Tabs a day) now on Levpil 500mg (2 Tabs a day). I was also taking Lipifol D3 (1 Tab a Day) which my doctor changed as I was having joint pain. Now I'm taking Losar A (1 Tab a day) and Ubicar (2 Tabs a day) along with Levipil 500mg. My current HSCRP levels is at 2.8 mg/L compared to 1.6mg/L taken 6 months back. I would like to know is this high level of HSCRP due to my medications? and will it come back to normal once my 3 yr course is completed. Any other suggestions OR information would also be grateful. I have attached my reports old and new.

Brief Answer: Raised HSCRP increases the risk of heart disease Detailed Answer: Hi Mr. XXXXXXX Thanks for posting your query on this forum. I have carefully gone through your query, as well as, old and new lab reports. HSCRP is NOT elevated due to medications and therefore, is independent of completion of the 3 years' course. Firstly, I feel that you should know something about HSCRP(High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein), in order to understand the significance of its raised value. HSCRP estimation is done to Assess the risk of heart disease in asymptomatic individuals. You being a case of hypertension, a rise in HSCRP indicates higher risk of developing heart disease. Further, the earlier report had shown that you had high lipid levels, which (as per the new report) have come down to within normal range following use of Lipifol. It would therefore, be preferable that you get your heart's status evaluated (ECG and Stress ECHO/TMT) to rule out underlying/undiagnosed heart disease (as a complication of hypertension). Hence, a healthy lifestyle, weight reduction to ideal level, low fat, well-balanced diet, regular physical exercises, meticulous control of blood pressure, maintenance of blood lipid levels to normal range and, total abstinence from alcohol/smoking will reduce your risk to develop heart disease. Also, HSCRP may be increased in inflammation of the liver and, arthritis of autoimmune etiology (such as, Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylosis). It is therefore possible that your joint pains may be a manifestation of autoimmune arthritis. Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me; order required tests, and- based on the reports- will arrive at a certain diagnosis and prescribe suitable treatment as advised. Hope I have addressed your concerns to your complete satisfaction and you find my response helpful and informative. I will be happy to answer further queries, if any. Take care, Col (Dr.) Rakesh Karanwal
