What Does Positive Rubella IgG Test During Pregnancy Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Hi, my rubella IgG is 500.0 IU/ml and rubella IgM is 0.26 COI. Is this a high risk scenario? I am 9 weeks pregnant. My doctor has advised for a Rubella Avidity IgG test for further analysis.

Brief Answer:
avidity testing mandatory

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
Rubella IgG positive and IgM negative is an equivocal scenario and avidity testing becomes a mandate after that.
Basically we want to see that IgG positivity is due to a recent infection or an old infection.
If the avidity testing shows
- high avidity it means it was an old infection so nothing to worry
- but in case it is a low avidity status then it is an issue and we might have to terminate this pregnancy.
Rubella affects fetus in a very adverse manner and thus causes various congenital abnormalities.
Get the test done and then we can share the results and this decide the further course of action.
All the best.
