What Does My Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: Hi. I have a follow-up ultrasound this Friday. My story is as follows . I had a transvaginal ultrasound back in the middle of August due to some bloating, fullness , etc.. I was told all was fine. I also had an abdominal ultrasound , all
Was fine . My symptoms went away after about 3 weeks. ( gastro though some sort of bug that causes gastritis ). Come middle of Septmeber, I began to have lower abdominal issues, diarrhea , urgency( of stools ). My gastroenterologist said to have a ct scan ( had had a colonoscopy 20 months ago and all was fine) . So the Ct scan ( done September 24, 6 weeks after ultrasound ) showed I had a possible multiloculated right Ovarian cyst( nothing else ) . My regular doctor said to see my gyn . Of course I was surprised that a cyst was there as I was told everything was fine after ultrasound In August . Saw my gyn and she said I had a baby cyst ( one on each ovary ) back in August . The one I the left must have dissolved . Anyway. She said she believes it
Is a hemogrraphic cyst and had me follow up in 5 weeks .( this Friday ). As time has gotten closer , I have become more nervous . She has told me repeatedly if she was concerned of malignancy , she would not have had me wait . Can the type of cyst been seen clearly even when it is a baby cyst ( I understand that the type of cyst can not be seen with 100%) accuracy , but I guess I want to get a sense . I have had no pain . My September period was different , but October 's period was normal. I am 47 btw..
My gyn did not want to do 125
Test because she knows of possible false positives and did not want to increase my anxiety . I have been taking apple code vinegar,'just started applying castor oil and am seeing an acupuncturist . With all of those other tests , would anything else be out of order if there was a chance of malignancy ? Any feedback you can give would be great . Thanks

Brief Answer:
Likely to be a benign cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Ovarian cysts if hemorrahagic can be diagnosed on an ultrasound scan due to their typical texture. These are benign and slow growing cysts and are not worrisome. In case the cyst grows to more than 5 cm size then only a surgical removal is recommended. In your case if your gynecologist feels that it is a hemorrhagic cyst then there is no need to worry. Do get the follow up ultrasound scan done to see any increase in size of the cyst.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks for your quick response . So even when the cyst is a "baby " cyst the features are pretty distinctive and they can tell. The ct scan On September 24 showed a possible 4.7x2.8 cm cyst then ... So it had grown that much . Is that normal for that type of cyst ? If it had gotten bigger, would I know? Coul I feel anything if it was dissolving ? So if it was close to 5 cm in September, there might be a good chance I might need it removed if it did not shrink or gotten bigger ? Do cysts change from benign to malignant ? Thanks .

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes. Hemorrhagic cyst can be identified by an expert sonologist.
In case the cyst increases in size now then it might need to be removed. Such cysts are usually asymptomatic. You will not feel its change in size. This can only be detected after investigations. The large cysts or actively growing cysts may turn malignant so it is best to get them removed.
Hope my answer is helpful.

What causes a benign cyst to become malignant or is it that it is not diagnosed correctly? As would my likely hemogrraphic cyst change and become malignant? Also, would the size that mine was 6 weeks ago be considered fast growing or normal based on it was a baby cyst 6 weeks prior to that ? I am wondering if I could have a 4 X 8 cm cyst now ? ? One that has doubled in size ) . Thanks . I am just worried. Sorry for so many questions . Would not my gyn have had me had it removed if she was worried it would change ? Thx

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
There is no specific cause which causes a benign cyst to become malignant.
A fast growing cyst is suggestive of an abnormal cell formation. Wrong diagnosis is not a likely cause.
If your cyst grows further in size or just doubles then it should be removed. It is best to wait for your next scan.
Your gynecologist would have removed it if it seemed malignant to her.
Best regards.
