Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
I have been HypoThyroid for about 15 yrs . I'm 44 yrs old female .I was always on Levothyroxine & dosage kept changing once in a while . I was never a Hashimoto case. In Novemeber of 2014, my Naturopath allowed me to get off of Levothyroxine (100mcg) as she had put me on Maca ( a herb to address my hormone imbalance & Adrenal fatigue) & iodine ( 25 mg) to help with my Uterine fibroids to shrink. I continued on this protocol till last week & tested my Thyroid panel two days ago. Now Three months later, without any Thyroid meds here are my results:
my TSH High Sensitivity is 117; T4 Free is 0.4 & T3 Free is 1.7. ? I am also diabetic taking Metformin 850 mg , 2 pills a day. What do I do now?. Do I need to stop these two supplements immediately? Can my Thyroid hormones come back to normal with medication again? I am going to see my PCP next week &work on getting a treatment plan with him? Thanks in advance
Sincerely,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Restart on levothyroxine

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.

In long standing hypothyroidism the thyroid gland is non functioning and no supplements can improve it. Only option here is thyroid hormone replacement- levothyroxine.

So you should stop the supplements and has to be restarted on levothyroxine 100 mcg per day. Your thyroid function will normalise in 4-6 weeks time.

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you.
