What Does My Sonography Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Nov 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,

This is xxxxxxx. One of my friend's mother is having Urinary tract infection and is currently under medication. Her sonography report reads, Liver - mild hypoechoic in echotexture and both kidneys show minimally raised cortical echotexture.

Would you pls tell me what does it mean? is it because of the urinary tract infection? also will it become normal with course of medicines. I hope there is nothing to worry about it.
Thanks!

Brief Answer:
minimally raised cortical echotexture of both kidneys is not normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.

Minimally raised cortical echo-texture of both kidneys may indicate some underlying renal parenchymal disease which could be due to urinary tract infection or some chronic systemic disease like diabetes or hypertension.

So,it needs further evaluation.

Liver-mild hypoe-choic in echotexture should also be evaluated further by CT scan of abdomen to rule out chronic hepatitis or underlying liver pathology.

But before further discussion,I would like to ask about other blood investigations.

What about Liver and Renal function tests with blood haemogram?
What about blood electrolytes?

All these finding could become normal once she will complete treatment with antibiotics for urinary infection but I would want to rule out other liver and kidney pathology by various blood tests as I mentioned and CT abdomen.

Your treating physician will know about it.

You can send me liver and renal function tests reports if they have been done earlier. We would discuss it after going through them.

Regards,
