Question: Just had a life line screening. Kidney was abnormal. Creatinine 0.76-1.27 mg/dL ....0.94 Normal
eGFR >60mL/min/1.73 m2. ..... 59. Abnormal
Is this a concern for me or could this just be what my diet was the day before. I am going to see my MD
about this.

Brief Answer:
diet may affect creatinine but not GFR

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Diet may affect creatinine but should not affect GFR

The creatinine at 0.94 was within the normal range of 0.76 to 1.27 but the GFR is decreased.

It decreases with age even in persons with no illnesses even more if there are chronic illnesses but you stated that you have no known chronic conditions.

At 59 , it would be said to indicate mild to moderate loss of kidney function according to the staging of kidney disease.

With a history of no chronic illnesses, you may want to consider repeating this to make sure that it is accurate.

If it is accurate then it would be important to determine if there are any other causes other than aging.
This would require recheck of blood pressure and blood sugar. Imaging of the urinary system by ultrasound, may also be needed as well to look for any structural causes or changes.

Additional blood tests to check calcium.phosphorus and potassium levels, which can sometimes be abnormal, may also be needed along with a complete blood count.

Treatment--
Making sure your blood pressure continues to be normal along with the blood sugar and cholesterol would prevent progression.

Treating the specific cause if it is found

Avoiding medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen etc ,which can worsen kidney function

There are some medications that are thought to be kidney protective eg enalapril, ramipril, lisinopril, micardis, valsartan and other meds in this family.
They are usually used in diabetics to protect the kidneys or in high blood pressure but some studies have shown that they have benefit otherwise

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
