What Does My Hernia Surgery Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Jul 2014
Question: I had hernia surgery a couple of months ago and was reading the operative report (don't ask why, I had a lot of time on my hands during recovery and want to be informed on such things). Can you please help me interpret the following excerpt in layman's terms? (I'm assuming he meant "component" separation though I hope it was "competent" :)

"There was a lateral defect in the upper abdomen and there was an epigastric defect containing colon contents... The fascial edges were trimmed in preparation. At this time, a competent [sic] separation was carried out by elevating and the rectus sheath was incised lateral to it and elevating further oblique muscles causing the anterior layer to be released, facilitating a tension-free closure. Still there was a sufficient large defect noted. At this time, a 20 x 16 biological mesh was brought in... sutured with a looped PDS in full length, and a tension-free biological surgical graft was placed... Additional interrupted sutures were placed to reinforce."

I was told by my primary during a follow-up that it felt as though some abdominal muscle tissue was left open for the purpose of preventing a future tear that might occur down the road from trying to close the muscle too tight.

Brief Answer:
Yes Probably it is Component

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in

It seems he has misspelled it, it should be component and again a Sac and not a Sic

It is sac of hernia
Tension free repair is the golden standard as the reoccurance rates are lower

Biological mesh does not produce foreign body reaction so are easily accepted by the body

The followup report mentions the left open muscle tissue as it was a tension free repair and that would have been covered by a mesh

Hope this helps
