What Does My MRI Scan Test Report Indicate?
Question: I had an episode three days ago of blurring vision in both eyes. I checked with an ophthalmologist, who assured meet that my eyesight was fine and suspected TIA (Transitory Ischemic Attack) and suggested I meet a Physician/Neurologist. I met a Neuro who advised an MRI of the brain and an MR Angiography of the Carotid Arteries. My MRI Brain concludes with an impression:MRI of brain shows few lacunar ischaemic foci in bilateral cerebral hemispheres.
What does this reflect with ref my health condition? Do I need any treatment or medication long term?

1. Lacunar infarctions are also similar areas of reduced brain supply in the brain usually less than 10 mm in diameter. By itself they are not serious but it can be an alarm for strokes in future. It signifies areas in the brain which were subject to slightly deficient blood supply probably due to occlusion of small blood vessels supplying the brain. It might be seen in elderly people and those having hypertension, diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia.
2. A stroke risk analysis is to be done and medicines are to be prescribed to prevent more such episodes and avoid the precipitation of a stroke.
3. It is also suggested that you get your cardiovascular disease risk assessment done to know if you are at risk at heart disease.
4. Your neck arteries are clear and there is no significant disease or narrowing of the neck arteries. This is an important test and shows that the there is no major concern in the carotid or vertebral arteries.
5. The lacunar infects are seen earlier in patient of hypertension, diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia. Should you have any of these conditions then better control is suggested with regular follow up.
