What Does My MRI Scan Test Report Indicate?

I have a 01 month old male child. Immediate after the delivery, my baby was shifted to Intensive Care Unit for 08 days. On the second day of delivery my baby had convulsions (fits/seizures). The Pediatrician concerned advised for Brain MRI of my baby. As such one week ago, the MRI Scan was done and the report was received in which it is stated that " Widened sylvian fissures and suspected perisylvian polymicrogyria" .
Please describe in detail about the observation given in the MRI Report i.e. " Widened sylvian fissures and suspected perisylvian polymicrogyria" .
Is this a very serious issue? Should I Immediately consult concerned specialist? or is this normal?
please opine the seriousness, cause, and the future effects of this.

I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.
I have gone through the medical history provided and my impression is that Perisylvian polymicrogyria has resulted due to the antenatal insult to the foetus due to placental abruption.
Polymicrogyria is actually a brain developmental anomaly due to the neuronal migration defect in utero.It can result even in debilitating neurological deficits like refractory seizures,motor and sensory deficits along with cognitive decline.However,symptoms may vary from less severe to very severe in individuals.
Your baby should be treated for symptoms.Like,if he is getting seizures,antiepileptic medicines should be given to prevent further complications due to seizures.Besides,he should be closely observed for baby milestones,motor development(like limbs movement,neck holding,turning in bed,standing,walking) and kept under the monitoring of a Pediatric Neurologist.

At present what you opine after going through the MRI Report. I want to know that how serious/dangerous it is for my baby. what should be the possible treatment that I should go for and the precautionary measures. do i need a surgical operation of my baby or the medicines will do the work.

1)One can't comment upon the exact seriousness of the condition at present.Only the forthcoming time will tell.If he grows up normally,learns neck holding,sitting,standing,walking and speaking on time & if he does not keep having recurrent seizures,then probably the disease will be having a mild course.On the other hand,if he keep having these complications,then,he will be having a severe course.
2)No special precautions.It is the nature of the disease that may turn prognostically good or bad.
3)Treatment should be symptomatic.Like,if he keeps having seizures,he should be on antiepileptic medicines.There are no medicines which can reverse the brain changes or cure the damage done,though.
4)Hopefully,he does not require surgery at present.I suggest you to visit a Pediatric Neurologist,so that he can examine the kid and make a final opinion.You should be under his/her guidance and observation.
