What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: Thank you for your follow-up. An interesting turn of events. I did have an MRI done on my back which showed a slightly bulging disc between L5 / S1 area. One of the Dr believes it has everything to do with my pain from my pubic area through my testicles as it has applied pressure on nerves in this area. My back has progressively gotten worse and I do experience a lot of pain in this region. When I saw a pain specialist recommended by the above mentioned Dr. the pain specialist wanted to also check my psoas muscle and we are currently going through an order on an MRI in this region . Since this is a 3 mos injury at this time and everyone is still trying to figure it out, I went to a referred acupuncturist who has focused on my internal soft tissue muscles to which she believes there was a tear and it is now healing. She hits some points that make me squirm at times. I have seen the most recovery in this area due to the accupuncture which has been two weeks.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to nerve compression or muscle tear.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The bulging disc between L5-S1 area can cause a mild nerve root compression causing the pain in the area you mentioned. The nerve root compression usually gets relieved by taking oral muscle relaxants, methylcobalamin supplements and adequate hydration.
Psoas spasm or a mild tear in the muscle fibers are also likely possibilities. Acupressure can also help in reliving the nerve compression. It is good that you are feeling much better now. Doing a hot compress in your lower back will also help in relaxing the muscle spasm.
I hope this answers your query.

I really appreciate your responses and great information. One of the Dr.'s recommended a potential epidural. What are your thoughts on this approach? The thought was to reduce inflammation and get everything back to normal....

Brief Answer:
Acupuncture is better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Epidural can help if the pain is due to nerve root compression at the level of disc. If you are getting relief by acupuncture then it is best to wait and see its effect. Epidural can give you relief only for few weeks.
Hope my answer is helpful.
