What Does My CT Scan Report Of Chest Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Feb 2015
Question: Dear Doctor XXXXXXX

I hope you are doing well and still remember me.

Please find the attachment, appreciate if you could further explain to me the results. As I understand, the result is not malignant and nothing to concern with cancer.

What is granuloma or lymph node? Also, regarding the 6-mm bone island report, is this something I have to worry?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best regards,

XXXX

Brief Answer:
You might need ultrasound abdomen after 6 months for kidney cyst and stone

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for sending in your query.

I am doing good and hope you are also in the best of your health.

Probably you were having a right sided chest pain, guess you are feeling better.

May I request you to please find your report details below.

The investigation is a plain CT scan of the chest and it has been done on a good machine.

My observations are as follows

1. At the top part of left lung there is a 3 mm nodule (white dot) which has been thought to be a benign finding. At size of 3 mm, it is difficult to say the exact nature of such a nodule (written as indeterminate). However most of these nodules at 3 mm are usually due to an old infection (granuloma) or a small lymph node and both are benign findings and not a concern if found as a single entity.

As per international guidelines by Fleischner society (name of group of people who have done research on lung nodules), if you do not smoke and there is no history of lung cancer in your family, then nothing needs to be done if there is a nodule less than 4 mm in diameter. If there is a history of chronic smoking or history of lung cancer in family then a repeat CT scan after 12 months is proposed.

I am sure that you do not have any high risk therefore you can feel comfortable that the 3 mm nodule is a completely harmless one.

2. The thyroid nodule is present as seen earlier. It measures 1.8 cm in diameter.

3. Bone island is a small focus of compact bone and appears whiter than the rest of the surrounding area. In your right 5th rib there is a bone island measuring 6 mm in diameter. Ribs are one of the areas where bone islands are commonly found. There is no reason to worry and bone islands are harmless in nature.

4. There is a 1.9 cm diameter cyst in the upper pole of right kidney. A cyst in kidney is a balloon like fluid filled structure. It is most likely that your cyst is a simple one. If the cyst was more than 3 cm in diameter then there was a bit of a concern. Since it is 1.9 cm in diameter therefore there is no immediate concern.

A stone measuring 2 mm in diameter is also there in the upper pole of right kidney. This size of stone is small and usually does not cause any obstruction.

The stone in your kidney is not causing any obstruction at present and does not require any specific medication in the absence of any symptoms. However you might choose to follow instructions below to avoid any more stones in your kidneys and to cause the stone to disappear.

DOs for kidney stones
(i) Drinking as much as 1.5 to 2.5 liters a day may help flush out your urinary system. This will also allow small stones to pass through.
(ii) Visit washrooms regularly and empty your bladder when you feel like doing urination.
(iii) Please take fruits like apple, papaya, watermelon, pineapple, sweetlime, bananas and orange, vegetables like, white gourd, ladyfinger, pumpkin, pulses and legumes.
(v) If you have sharp pain then you should consult your doctor and take pain reliever medications under strict supervision.

DONTs for kidney stones
(i) Please avoid holding urine for long intervals.
(ii) Please reduce foods containing oxalates like non veg, vegetables like spinach, tomato, cauliflower, brinjals, nuts like cashew, pista and almonds.
(iii) Decrease extra salt in foods.
(iv) Avoid spicy pickles.
(v) Please eat meat products in normal amounts, avoid eating too much.

It will be good if you can get another ultrasound scan to know the size of cyst in upper pole of right kidney and the stone also.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
