What Does Increased Platelet Count In Blood Report Regarding Complex Cyst Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 May 2014
Question: I had pre-op bloodwork done for surgery to remove a large comlex cyst and hernia repair. The results came back as follows platlet 497 MCH 34 and BUN 5. What could cause this? I have read that cancer can cause high platlet count could this mean the cyst is cancerous? My surgery is scheduled for Thursday and could any of these results cause higher risk of complications? Thank you for your reply.

Brief Answer:
Increased platelet is not related to complex cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mechele
Thanks for writing to HCM

You shouldn't worry at all.
Before operation, complex cyst is properly evaluated by contrast CT Scan of abdomen and tumour markers. Possibility of cancerous changes are excluded prior to operation(however pathological findings are confirmatory) and increased platelet is not related to complex cyst.

You have mildly raised platelet count. Normal level of platelet count in blood is 150,000-450,000 per mm³.Mildly increased values doesn't necessarily signify disease. It may be due to many reasons. It is important to know complete hemogram,ESR values.

You also have mildly raised MCH values. It may be be due to macrocytic anemia due to deficiency of vitamin B 12.

You have normal BUN level.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
