Brief Answer: cirrhosis Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for using healthcare magic Cirrhosis is the medical term that is used to refer to replacement of normal liver with scar tissue and nodules (small masses that form as the liver is trying to repair the scar tissue). Scar tissue is hard and cirrhosis changes the liver from a firm texture to a hard one. There are different causes of cirrhosis. The most common are: (1) alcohol abuse (2)hepatitis- this is infection and inflammation of the liver by the hepatitis viruses such as hepatitis b or c (3)non alcoholic liver disease- this starts off as fat build up in the liver due to diet and reduced activity. When no treatment is started , it can progress to cirrhosis (4)autoimmune disease (5)genetic or inherited disorders (6)side effect of medication (7)idiopathic- cause not found The changes cannot be reversed but if the cause can be found and treated then it can prevent further changes and reduce any complications. Lifestyle changes are important with a diet that includes enough calories and protein. The protein prevents muscle wasting or loss that can occur with liver disease. Physical activity is also important , also to prevent muscle wasting. If you do not have any symptoms, then the changes may be mild and intervention may prevent any further damage. Normally is the damage is severe there would be symptoms such as itching, swelling of the abdomen, jaundice. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
