default
Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: My GGT is 228. My urine is very dark and foul smelling. Is this a liver problem. I drink a good amount more often than I should and take alot of tylenol. There is no signs of a UTI. Sodium 146. Carbon Dioxide 15 choleseterol 6.9. These tests were taken a couple of weeks ago in Port Moresby, Papau New Guinea. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Probably related to excess alcohol intake!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Increases in GGT are common in liver, gall bladder and bile duct diseases. This would need a complete liver function evaluation to be sure of what the exact origin of this is. Your excess alcohol and tylenol intake is not good for the liver. Was there bilirubin in your urine?

If GGT was the only abnormal result, this would be more suggestive of chronic alcohol intoxication. For this, I will advice that you greatly from your alcohol consumption and get the laboratory investigations repeated after 8weeks. Should they return normal at this time, then that would have been the most likely cause. if they remain higher than normal, a comprehensive investigation f the liver, bile ducts and the gall bladder would be mandatory.

In all, isolated increases could signal chronic alcohol intoxication. Cut down on your consumption and control results in 8weeks. Should they remain abnormal, a more comprehensive testing would be necessary. If they return normal, letting go of alcohol may be the logical thing to do.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
