Posted on Thu, 18 Sep 2014
Question: I have a swollen gland/lymph node on the left side of my face under the jaw line and then down my neck. One is hard the other soft and tender. Before this appeared (Friday night) I also developed a rash on my face that is red, warm and swollen, next to my nose extending over to mid cheek.

Brief Answer:
Cellulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. From the information and photo you have provided, this is most likely to be cellulitis of the face. This is a bacterial infection that has spread to deeper layers of the skin. The infection has caused swelling of your lymph nodes which accounts for the nodes you feel in your neck.
I suggest you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. You should see your doctor as I consider you need a 7 day course of antibiotics to clear up the infection.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I thought cellulitis was due to an infection from a wound or incision? Not necessarily the case?

Brief Answer:
Not always.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for the further question. Cellulitis is caused by bacteria penetrated the skin to deeper layers. It is usually caused by strep or staph bacteria. It can be started from tiny break in the skin such as an infected pore. You may not have noticed the very initial infection. A wound or incision can be the start but not always.
I hope this explains it better.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
