What Does A Lump Inside The Rectum Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Feb 2015
Question: Have a small lump half an inch inside the rectum. I went to a GP and he said that the pain (low threshold) I was experiencing had nothing to do with the lump but was due to a fissure. He said the lump was a benign cyst - nothing to worry about. After researching, I think it's a perennial hematoma. It's blue "ish" in color, does not really hurt & is the size if a pea slightly "inside" the rectum. I am worried and wonder if this is a new permanent part of my anatomy or a hematoma?

Brief Answer:
Laxative and Sitz bath

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

Noted the history fully and understood the possible problems you have.
Since you have consulted a GP, I was wondering if he has examined you or not.

The history of bluish lump inside the rectum which does not really hurt, and is the size of the pea slightly inside the rectum can be due to prolapsing pile (hemorrhoid). Pile is basically an enlarged anal vein. Hematoma is not at all common at this area and is very painful if it occurs.
Pile is always a painless, non-tender lump unless it is thrombosed or infected.

Fissure-in-ano is always painful on day one and the pain slowly reduces with time.

I would suggest you the following:
Take Laxative if you have hard stools or if you are constipated.
Sitz bath- Sit in a large tub with warm water, this soothes the area, reduces pain and helps for early healing, proper cleaning of the part.
Consult a Surgeon / Surgical Gastroenterologist for direct examination, diagnosis and addition of further treatment.

I hope this answer helps you. Please feel free to ask for more if you need to.

Doctor (GP) examined me. Said my pain was a fissure & the bubbled mass was a benign cyst & something not to worry about. I went in for slight pain and due to the lump I felt & the doctor said the pain had nothing to do with the small lump but was due to a fissure I didn't realize I had.

I said what about the lump & he said it was nothing to worry about. Did a test to check fecal remanents for blood - negative. Had colonoscopy last year - all was well.

I think the doctor may have been wrong in saying the lump is nothing.

Question: will it go away? Is there medicine I can take? I'm kind of scared & nervous. My stool is not hard - normal - no constipation. I don't know how I got a fissures & tho lump since I didn't have any of the things that are listed as "causes."

I'm traveling overseas next week & scared I'll be in pain with this while on a trip that was planned a year ago.

Brief Answer:
Get a Consultation with Surgical Gastroenterologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your feedback.
It is good to know the GP examined you and you got the diagnosis.
Yes, the fissure causes pain.

Your GP's saying that, nothing to worry about means he is finding this as not a serious thing that you should worry about.

Your query  will it go away? Is there medicine I can take?

It is a bit difficult thing to say about since I have not seen or examined it nor I have a picture I can comment upon. I mean if you can post a picture (I know this is bit difficult).
Medicines can be advised only if the diagnosis is well known.

I am bit worried about the bluish lump- this has to be seen by a Consultant (Surgical Specialist) to know what exactly is this. Painless swelling has to be investigated, at least examined for a certain clinical diagnosis, as also for the fissure; why would these be there without any obvious causes...

You can certainly travel abroad as you do not have any causes that can cause fissure and / or lump.

When would you be back ?

By the way you have not mentioned your gender, age, any past medical history of diseases or medicines (except for colonoscopy which was normal) Why was the colonoscopy done?
