What Does A Lump In Abdomen Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Sep 2014
Question: I recently visited my Gp reguarding a lump in my abdomen and some mild pain steaming from under the breast bone going lower near the gall bladder, I can only describe the pain as like a needle sensation. .its not severe pain and I can carry out daily activities without being in pain. The lump is just above and across from the belly button right side (gallbladder).. its firm but has some give its irregular shaped. My gp thinks it could be gall stones or gall bladder disease, Im 23 and out of my mind with worry I keep connecting everything, just wanting a bit of advice on this, im now waiting for an ultrasound scan. I do have a very slight bit of yellowing on my toenails on the left foot not sure if this is connected or if its a fungal infection maybe??.. Im out of my mind with worry Im connecting alsorts of things like pancreatic and liver problems.

Brief Answer:
Get Ultrasound and Liver function tests done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX the pain you mention could be due to Gall bladder stones. The lump you mention near your belly button is unlikely to be due to gall bladder disease as Gall bladder lumps rarely reach that size to be palpable near belly button. However, we should not jump to conclusions. You should wait for your Ultrasound which is a very good investigation to diagnose gall bladder problems. As for the yellowness, it would be better to discuss with your GP and get a Liver Function test done which will be able to tell whether you have jaundice or not. It should not be anything sinister dont worry and relax. Do let me know after the tests. Take care. If you have any clarifications then do ask. If not then please go ahead and rate this answer.

thank you... the lump is quite further away from the belly button it is located around that area of were the pain is, the pain is mild it isn't unbearable its like sharp twinges that come and go and then a lingering pain at times (mild though)... my appetite is good and my general health is good.

I suppose waiting for an ultrasound is the scariest part, In my mind Im convinced it's something serious but I have always been a natural worrier. I have no jaundice anywere else on my skin its just a very light colouring on the toe nails.

on the side wear I do get the pain it does feel rather lumpy bumpy (gristle type) ??
Im trying not to to think the worst, obviously im thinking tumours and al sorts, so I will try to calm down about it..

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be a tumor. Relax

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

With the new information you gave it is highly unlikely to be a tumor or cancer. Your age does not support the diagnosis of cancer and your symptoms also go against such a diagnosis. Most cancers would affect people age above 50yrs and would be painless slow growing masses.

It could however be gall stones which is a common disease and has simpler treatment modalities.

Stressing about it wont help specially when what you are thinking of is highly unlikely. So I advice you to relax and get busy in something that you enjoy doing or a hobby till the Ultrasound is done.

And yes those lumps could very well be lipomas which dont deserve any treatment.

Take care and cheer up.

many thanks I do feel slightly relieved by your response,

however I do have some slight stomach discomfort on occasions, not aching as such , but a strange sensation, im assuming that this potentially is connected to a gall bladder issue??

quite rightly as you said I do need to calm down and just wait for my scan

Brief Answer:
It could be Gall bladder pain. wait for scan.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Im happy that you feel relieved. You should wait for the scan. The pain could very well be due to it. But it is treatable even if it is picked up there is light beyond that. So dont be scared and go for your scan without fear. Take care.
