default
Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: Itchy rash above my outer right ankle - about 6 inches long and about 1/3 around my leg. Has persisted for nearly 10 months. Never gotten worse or better - does not spread nor do I have it any other place. Very itchy - mostly in the evening.

Brief Answer:
Eczematous skin lesion

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
I have seen the attached picture.
You seem to have developed a lesion of neurodermatitis which is basically an itchy eczematous skin condition .
The most important thing is to avoid itching or scratching the area since this type of skin eczema tends to increase by scratching .
Keep the area moisturised always by application of moisturisers or oil over the lesion two to three times daily .This will decrease the urge to itch.
Application of a topical steroid like cortisone over the lesion twice daily helps in most cases in the resolution of the skin lesion.
Sometimes oral antihistamines have to be given along too .

Hope it helps

Thank you for your quick response. I will stop scratching it and be more diligent with the application of moisturizers. Could you please tell me what causes this? Is it viral or bacterial or something else? Any way to prevent?
