What Does A High Resting Heart Rate Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Can someone have a high resting heart rate naturally for example 98bpm and be able to cope with this , do they have a problem in the future of suffering with heart attacks, heart disease, strokes even after cardiologist has done holter, ekg and blood test. Is high resting heart rate something very dangerous. The beats are regular and at a normal rythm . The holter showed sleep heart rate is between 50-60 and activities can make it go up during the day. Is this something dangerous or harmfull for 23 year old male who doesnt drink or smoke and has a good appetite. It had been read that the norm of resting heart rate is 60-100 and 98bpm seems to be at the high end . So if it exceeds 98bpm will I be at high risk of heart attack and arihymias etc.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
would help to reduce other risk factors

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

A high resting heart rate can be associated with increased risk of heart disease and stroke in the future in some persons.

The fact that it is not consistently high (low during sleep) is good.

There are different risk factors for heart disease and stroke and if some of the other risk factors can be reduced then it would help.
Modifiable risk factors are: diet, activity, weight, smoking, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes.
Diet- use of a healthy diet reduces risk
Activity-at least 150 minutes of exercise a week is recommended. Consist exercise may cause the pulse to decrease
Weight- maintain a healthy weight
Cholesterol- the values be should checked and maintained within normal range with lifestyle and medication if necessary
Blood pressure and diabetes- this should also be assessed and controlled if needed

There are risk factors that cannot be changed such as family history or ethinicity.

The high normal pulse rate is only one risk factor but if the others can be controlled then this would significantly reduce any risk.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
