What Do These Following Chest X-ray Findings Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jun 2016
Question: I have had a cough and my internal medicine physician ordered chest x-rays. Below is the report.

My question revolves around the finding of "mild multi-focal sub-segmental atelectasis"

1. What does this mean?
2. Is this serious? Should I be concern?
3. In your medical opinion, should I have this checked out further?

REPORT
XR CHEST 2 VIEWS PA + LATERAL
CLINICAL INDICATION: Cough and chest pain.
COMPARISON: Chest radiography XXXXXXX 25, 2007.
FINDINGS:
The lungs demonstrate mild multi-focal sub-segmental atelectasis, but there is
no focal site of pulmonary airspace consolidation. There is no pulmonary edema.
There is no pleural effusion or pneumothorax. The heart size and mediastinum
are unchanged. There is no new focal bony abnormality.
IMPRESSION:
No evidence of pneumonia, pleural effusion, or pneumothorax.
Overall, essentially unchanged examination since XXXXXXX 25, 2007.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry for this.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
I have gone through the x ray report you have mentioned.
Atelectesis is partial collapse of part of lung. It is commonly due to lung infection. Lung infection causes collection of secretions and these secretions can obstruct lumen and cause partial collapse of part of lung.
Atelectesis is also seen as healing from previous lung infection.
No need to worry for x ray report as it is stable over period of 8-9 years.

1. Since how many days you are having cough? The cough started April 23, 2016. It was persistent and I was taking OTC cough medicine to control it (Delsym). After a couple of weeks, it seemed to disappear, but now it is back but no where as bad as it was in late april. I keep being told it is viral.
2. Do you have breathlessness? I am not having any difficulty breathing, but I have not tried to exercise recently.

Initial, it was a productive cough as I would cough up yellow mucus/phlegm. That lasted about a week. Since then, it has been a dry cough.

Did your doctor advised about CT scan or bronchoscopy?
My internal medicine physician did not advise about CT scan or bronchoscopy.

My internal medicine physician said, "it is lung that is not fully expanded and is not a problem usually. Report says no change since 2007 which is reassuring."
