What Do These AST And ALT Levels Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: Hi
My blood tests show AST of 22 U/l and ALT of 13 U/L. GGT is 9 U/L. Should I be concerned that the ratio of AST to ALT is 1.7 even thought the levels of AST and ALT are normal. I was not sure which type of doctor to go to (did not see hepatologist). Thank you.

Brief Answer:
All reports are normal, nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.

First of all the reports you have mentioned are all within absolutely normal range.
Since the AST and ALT are normal, their ratio does not have much of an importance .
The best part is the GGT is normal, hence the ratio does not have any thing to worry about.
So please do not worry.
(Some references: An AST to ALT ratio of 2:1 or greater is suggestive of alcoholic liver disease, particularly in the setting of an elevated gamma-glutamyl transferase.)

If all the reports are normal, your health is excellent in general and on no medications as per the history your have provided, I was just wondering the need to visit any Doctor.
Please tell me if there are any symptoms you have or any other history related to medical problems so that I can suggest you the Doctor to visit.

I hope this answer helps you. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications or if you feel there is a gap of communication.

Thank you very much. Yes, your answer is very clear.

I am taking all of these tests for insurance purposes (I live in Europe) but started to get a bit nervous when I started reading that others were concerned by their ratio of AST to ALT. I am now reassured.
Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
You are most welcome.

Detailed Answer:
You are most welcome.
Practically speaking it is the combination of the symptoms, the signs, the clinical evaluation, the lab reports and special tests, all taken together that makes the diagnosis.
I am happy that you are satisfied.
Wishing you the same good health forever.
