What Do Non-itchy, Big Red Splotches On The Back Of Both Arms Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Sep 2017
Question: I have these reddish splotches on the back of both arms that are not raised and don't itch. They get redder if I stand in the sun - which is when they were discovered by my brother; "What is wrong with the back of your arm?!" The area was about the size of an orange (randomly spaced) and that was maybe 6-7 (?) years ago. They have now spread to just above the elbow. Soon after the discovery, a dermatologist told me it was some type of eczema and gave me this cream. I didn't believe him (because of no itching) but used the cream anyway for a month or two. It did absolutely nothing. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Due to some forms of hypersensitivity

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I have checked the attached images. It seems that the lesions are a result of photosensitivity. Such a thing could occur due to deposition of immune complexes under the skin. It is similar to but not same as eczema. Since no specific complaints like itchiness or any other thing is involved, I would insist you to leave it alone. If you develop itchiness or some sensitivity, I would insist you to take Montair LC tablet (monteleukast + levocetirizine, prescription medicine) once daily for a few days.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards

If it's photosensitivity shouldn't it only occur when I'm in the sun? It never goes away, night or day, but has slowly spread down my arm. Also, I will get woozy and/or slightly nauseated when I get hot. I can't even take a hot bath. Might this heat sensitivity be related to my skin condition.

Brief Answer:
Hormone deprivation could be contributory

Detailed Answer:
Photosensitivity is a possibility but not the only possibility. For deposition of immune complexes the light trigger need not be present and it could be present all though.

Going by the other symptoms it seems that you are suffering from hormone deprivation. Such a thing is commonly encountered in perimenopausal or post-menopausal women. If that is the case, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could provide relief. You need to visit a gynecologist to get evaluated and tested. He would be able to set up the right regimen for you.

Let me know if I could help further.
