What Do My Blood Sugar Levels Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Sep 2016
Question: I took my blood sugar 2 hours after eating and it read 109. 30minutes later it was 97.
My hba1c is 4.2 & I have mild insulin resistance and need to lose 30lbs. Are these readings ok?

Brief Answer:
Yes

Detailed Answer:
These readings are normal indeed.

Sorry to learn about your bothersome symptoms. When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)

Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH (checks your thyroid)

25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels (ideal range 40 to 60 ng/ml = 100 to 150 nmol/liter)

None of these tests require any fasting and can be done at any time of the day

Due to adenomyosis I became severely anemic due to blood loss. So currently I am recovering from anemia. I also have mitral valve prolapse and low normal blood pressure. My thyroid and kidney functions are normal as are electrolytes. However I get tired and shakey sometimes if i go long periods without eating. My blood sugar is always normal however my hba1c is 4.2 and i do have a dx of mild insulin resistance but my endo does not think thats what causes my symptoms. I also get tired a few minutes after eating 10-15

Follow up

Detailed Answer:
It is possible you may have a condition called Reactive Hypoglycemia in which the glucoses drop rapidly following meals.
I urge you to consult an endocrinologist in-person

Will the glucose monitor indicate reactive hypo? At what point should I test it to know
I have seen an endo, he ran all kinds of blood tests including the ones you mentioned and does not believe blood sugar is causing my symptoms. But Ive read online 4.2 a1c can be indicative of hypo

Brief Answer:
Second follow up

Detailed Answer:
Use the glucose monitor and if your readings are below 70 then it will be important to see the endocrinologist and consider undergoing a MIXED MEAL test
