What Do My LIPAS Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Apr 2016
Question: HI, My 8 year old son was complaining of stomach ache for a couple of days. We got tests done after showing him to the doctor. All his blood and stool tests were normal except LIPAS. The result was 134 U/L where the ref range was 10 to 85. What does this mean? I see from the net that it has to do with the pancreas but am not sure how serious the situation is. Also, he is a small for his age, height is 123 cms and weight is about 20 Kgs. Awaiting your guidance. Regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
This means that the pancreas is inflamed

Detailed Answer:
Hi....the test is LIPASE....if this is elevated or out of range... this means that the pancreas is inflamed for some reason. This is called Pancreatitis.

But this doesn't mean that you have to panic. Ultimately it is the clinical condition of the kid which matters and not the test reports alone.

I have a few questions for you -

1. Is the pain excruciating and limiting his daily activities lie schooling etc?
2. Is the pain associated with vomiting and if so what colour?
3. Did he eat Tapioca recently?
4. Did he use any medication in the past 2 weeks?
5. How are his bowel movements?

Please get back with answers so that I can guide you further.
