default
Posted on Sat, 14 Jun 2014
Question: Hi,
I shaved about a month ago and have noticed bumps right above my pubic area. I've attached a picture. One of them seems to clearly be an ingrown hair but others seem more like herpes. Could you please indicate what your opinion is. Thank you for your help

Brief Answer:
Molluscum contagiosum; Extraction/Cauterization

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the bumps above the pubic area. Your good resolution picture is enough to diagnose the entity.

After thoroughly analyzing the picture I can make out that you have the condition known as "Molluscum contagiosum".

To tell you simply about it- Molluscum contagiousum is a type of viral infection caused by molluscum contagiosum virus. It appears as a simple whitish bead and when fully formed mimics a pearl like whitish bump with central indentation in it.

You can see in high resolution that there is central indentation in the largest of the bump.

It is differentiated from the ingrown hair by its totally asymptomatic nature and never cause any discomfort except for itching some times rarely. In ingrown hair there is deep redness with swelling and pain.

Molluscum is commonly seen after an unprotected sexual intercourse or sometime without this thing also.

There are certain suggestions which are applicable in nay of the condition:

- The most important thing you should do is to not touch, pinch, pop or squeeze the area by any means.

-Stay away from hot and humid climate.

-Take two times bath and maintain good hygiene.

-Wear cotton clothes and cotton undergarments and especially change the undergarments two times a day and avoid friction of undergarment straps.

It is one of the simplest kind of viral infection and therefore can be treated very easily. It can be either extracted out by an extractor or can be cauterized under expert direction by radio-frequency or a chemical.

You can meet your primary care physician or preferably a dermatologist where it can taken out easily.

I again suggest you to not to touch or pinch and pop the area as it can get infected and form new lesions.

I hope these information will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

Wish you good health.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I don't mean to put you on the spot as this is just a picture but can you be certain that its not herpes? If so, how could I recognize herpes if I did have it?
Will it go away by itself if it's left untreated?
Can I still receive oral sex or would I be putting my partner at risk?
Will those tend to come back every few months even if I treat them?
Thank you very much for your help!

Brief Answer:
Herpes - fluid filled multiple vesicles and ulcers

Detailed Answer:
Hello young fellow,

Welcome again to the forum and thanks for your further follow up query. I can make out that you are quite anxious about possibility of herpes. Let me again reassure you that your condition is not at all herpes and I am cent percent sure about it.

To tell you medically - Herpes lesions manifest itself as small vesicles (fluid filled blisters) which remains for a day or two (never for weeks or month period) and then forms ulcers which are quite painful. These ulcers then heal in next 5-7 days.

To begin with these vesicles may be painful and itchy with discomfort and once the vesicles burst in a day or two then the ulcers which are formed are quite painful for next 4-5 days. The complete of clinical illness remains for 1-2 weeks only.

So the symptoms can never go unnoticed. It is typically seen as "fluid filled multiple vesicles present closely in a grouped manner" which you can see on net as a ready reference. Similarly there are grouped ulcers can never go unnoticed. Also you should know that if it is first episode of herpes then is always or mostly accompanied with fever and other of systemic symptoms of flu like illness which is quite pronounced.

You can see that neither your clinical picture nor any of the above smptomatology matches with your condition.

So just relax about herpes and do not think in that direction.

Regarding your further other queries:

- It can go away by itself also by good immunity of the body which sheds it off. But many a times we see formation of new lesions if the older ones are present. So it is better to get it removed at the earliest possible.

You can receive oral sex form your partner but with protection as your partner can get these bumps because of he infective nature.

Once you treat these completely then there is less chances of recurrence. In my patients with such a problem I suggest them to avoid friction and shaving of the area as it can cause spread of virus and new lesion formation. For the hair removal you can use a trimmer rather than shaving.

I finally again reassure you regarding simple nature of the problem which can be treated very easily.

I hope these information will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries or if not then can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Thank you for all this information.
I am currently in Paris, do you think removing those bumps is something a local dermatologist will be able to do if I go in for a regular appointment? Also, if I remove all of them, is it likely that they will return and that the virus will stay in my body? Should I notify my sexual partners in the future of this past condition?

Brief Answer:
You can meet any local dermatologist for removal

Detailed Answer:
Hello young fellow,

Welcome to the forum again.

As I said earlier that Molluscum contagiosum is one of the simplest viral infection encountered and is seen without sexual transmission also.

All the "dermatologist" are thoroughly trained for Extraction/Cauterization of the molluscum. You can meet any local dermatologist and can get it removed in few minutes.

Once all the lesions are extracted the possibility of recurrence is least. The virus is present in the bumps only so once removed the chances are least likely for recurrence. As it is well treatable and curable condition so you should not feel guilt or anything serious about it and so pressure of telling to your partner should not be present in your mind. I see so many cases of Molluscum contagiosum without sexual exposure too. SO just relax and do not worry about this simple condition.

Enjoy your weekend with best zeal.

"Best wishes for healthy life ahead".
