What Causes Yellowish Discharge From Wound On Leg Post Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: Background -June Fifth some weights fell on my lower leg. Major swelling xrays -no fracture, slight breakage of skin. Leg never healed, blood test no diabetes, culture taken and augmentin prescribed twice for culture identified. Later an ultrasound and no blood clots. Swelled up once after nearly healed, and wound reopen. Underwent two cycles of Augmentin. Driving to Idaho from Central California, ankle and specifically lower leg swelled up again. Broke open -one fourth to one half of inch, yellowish staining material came out. Wound seems to be healing nicely now. Last reopening was August 15.
Question - is there a reason to be concerned about ongoing infection. Leg has a bruised feeling to it, but nothing extreme or major, wonder if sense of bruise being present is more of imagination.

Brief Answer:
Infection not likely now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The yellowish staining material that is coming out is not likely to be due to an infection. This is a serosanguinous fluid which is responsible for the swelling in the area.
This fluid discharge is not worrisome as long as you take adequate precautions to prevent any infection in the area by keeping the area covered and avoid touching it with bare hands.
The bruised feeling will also gradually subside. Doing a hot fomentation with a hot water bag will help in an early healing. In case there is a rise in temperature or pain or the fluid is foul smelling or purulent then infection is likely and antibiotics will be needed.
I hope this answers your query.
