Question: I took my 12 yr old in to the doctor on Sunday(urgent care). I was told she just had a cold virus that was going around. Her temperature has been up and down anwhen I did a saline rinse on her a little while ago the mucous was a yellowish brown. Could she possibly have a sinus infection?

Brief Answer:
possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns that your daughter is having yellowish brown mucus.

If you have yellow snot or mucus it can mean that you have a virus or a sinus infection. Brown mucus can be due to consumed Chocolate, cocoa or with dusty environment.

Simple viral cold is always self limiting, doesn't require antibiotics. Sinusitis (fever, head-ache, thick mucus) needs clinical evaluation and active treatment.

I suggest you to manage with simple paracetamol and anti allergic medications for a couple of days.

In case of persistence, need to see an ent surgeon, to rule out other causes.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
