Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I have whooshing in both ears with dizziness and nausea. I had a heart attack in December and have a stent. No problems with the heart since then. I am 75 years old, 5ft.3in tall and weigh 104 pounds. I recently lost about four pounds. I am usually healthy and play tennis three times per week. What is going on?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern. Thank you for your question.

It is common that we cardiologists describe some medication to the therapy when an infarction happens. The main thing that may happen is that, because of many heart medicine we describe, there may be some disturbances in the gastro-intestinal system. I would recommend you to take gastric protecting medicine, if none is taken until now. At least, ranitidine, should have been described to your therapy. However, your cardiac problem was treated with a stent. A reassuring fact to me is that you perform physical activity regularly, playing tennis, which means your stent is good. This meaning, the disturbances do not arise from your physical activity. But, since you are 75 years of age, this does not mean you might not have a disorder related directly to the alimentary system. Therefore, if the pills, such as ranitidine or omeprazole, do not treat your symptoms, an upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy would be required, to detect whether there is a chronic or acute inflammation of the stomach.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
