What Causes White Patch On Back Of Throat With History Of Sinus Infection?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: Hi I'm so stressed and up late googling my issue. I had a sinus infection over two months ago that had turned into an awful deep mucous type cough. I was feeling better but now my right tonsil is enlarged and has a pea sized ball/round flesh colored growth on it that wasn't there before. I also have a white patch on the back of my mouth. I am definitely going to my doctor but until then, can I stop worrying this is cancer? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
No cancer.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having sinus and tonsill infection.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be sinus infection is the culprit causing pharyngitis (sore thoat), cough (lung infection) and tonsillitis with its post nasal drip (sinus secretions dripping back into throat).

Your whiti patch could be oral thrush (fungal infection) secondary to antibiotic usage.

I suggest you to to consult ent surgeon and get detailed ent examinationand if necessary blood tests (to rule out allergy for persistent sinusitis). depending on the examination reports further treatment is required accordingly.

Mean time, do salt water gargling, steam inhalation to clear sinus secretions and tab tyelynol 500mg twice daily for active pain.

Do not worry. It is not a cancer, it's just infection and requires antibiotics and if necessary anti fungals.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you so much. I took a photo to show you... Notice the "ball" growth in my tonsil? And the path on the opposite side of my mouth... It doesnt scrape off like thrush would? Is this still all normal? The antibiotic i took was over a month ago.

Brief Answer:
tonsillar hypertrophy

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

As per photo, it appears to be tonsillar hypertrophy with edematous uvula surrounding the pale mucosa (white color).

Yes. It is normal after a episode of tonsillitis. In my opinion, you can take anti allergic medications like tab.citrizine 10mg one tab at bed time (over the counter tab.zyrtec). It works for both (post nasal drip of sinusitis and allergy).

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
