What Causes Weakness On The Left Side Of Gluteal Muscles?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jul 2015
Question: I seem to have weakness on the left side of my body. My physiotherapist today stated that she thinks my left gluteals are about 15% weaker than the right gluteals. When doing martial arts I have to really try so much harder to do things with my left side. I have been on Risperidone for almost 20 years although earlier this year changed to a different anti-psychotic. Do you know what could be the cause?
I am concerned that I have had a stroke and/or have a heart problem and/or I have brain damage of some sort, either from the anti-psychotics I have been taking or maybe even the ECT I had once (four treatments). I have been having petit mal seizures for almost 20 years and apparently that is due to the Risperidone and that is why I was eventually taken off it.

Brief Answer:
It is not stroke...It is not heart disease.....

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this weakness on the left side of your gluteal muscles. Muscle weakness is not a side effect of risperidone. Also, your symptoms are not suggestive of stroke or a dart disease. However, muscles strength principally comes from how often they are used. if you use the right side more than the left side, there is no doubt that the left side may look smaller and weaker than the right side.

Because there are no other symptoms, I will advice that you continue on strengthening exercises. Your personal trainer should help you through this and follow the progress in muscle power over time. For sure, training will make it a lot better.

For now, I will say there is always a difference depending on which side is used more often than the other. No drug caused this and it is not suggestive of stroke or a heart disease. For now, follow through with exercise to improve this.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
