What Causes Vomiting Up Of Bile, Fever And Body Ache?

Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: My 79 year old brother experienced what he thought at the time was food poisoning. He became violently il with severe vomiting producing dark brown bile accompanied by chills, fever and flu like body ache for two days. He recovered, but experienced all of the above again two days later. I should advise you that he has a restriction band placed on his stomach (he was morbidly obese) and from time to time vomits when he eats too quickly or too much, but doesn't experience the severe episodes as described above. Have you a clue as to what precipitated his illness?

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query about your 79 years old brother.
To recapitulate: Male/79 - indigent - lives away from any hospital - stomach banded for morbid obesity - vomits on eating fast or too much - experience something like food poisoning - violently ill - severe vomiting dark brown bile - with chills, fever and flu like body ache for 2 days - recovered - but - same after 2 days - wants a clue as to what might have precipitated ....
My thoughts with reference to the history your have provided:
- Gastric bands are known to cause many complications like erosion, extrusion, with attendant sequel and complications of the nearby structures too.
- The symptoms could have been due to infection hence the fever with chill and flu like body ache. The body's resistance must have worked for the time being or might have taken some medication and hence got control but to recur due to the overpowering of the infection.
Proper clinical evaluation preferably by a GeneralSurgeon, investigations accordingly should help to get a correct diagnosis and get a proper treatment before the further complications develop.
I can understand that he is far away from any hospital, but at least attend the nearest clinical facility.

I hope this answer helps you to understand and take further decisions.
