What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhea After Using Nicotine Patches?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: I have had vomiting and diarrhea for several days now. All that's coming out is bright yellow bile, however. I also am sleeping a LOT. I have kept to a bland diet.
Also, this has somewhat coincided with beginning to use Nicotine patches. I have discontinued those as of last night, but the nausea and vomiting has continued this morning. I also am using anti-diarrhea medication.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Though the symptoms started around the same time as the onset of nicotine patches, this is likely only coincidental because this is not a known side effect of this medication.

Gastroenteritis is due to viral or bacterial infection most commonly.

Your fatigue would be related to the decreased nutritional status and fluid loss.

The main aspect of management of gastroenteritis are:
(1) oral rehydration- because decrease body fluid volume is the most important complication of gastroenteritis , it is important to maintain your fluids.
This can be done by using oral rehydration packs normally available at local pharmacies or using some sports drinks such as gatorade if the first option is not available.

You need to use small amounts at a time or the vomiting would occur. You would start with approx 1 tbs every 5 to 10 minutes for an hour. If this is tolerated, you would increase the amount slowly.

(2)It would be best to reduce your use of any solid food even bland ones for at least a few hours. Your intestines are not ready to absorb food and when used would cause the diarrhoea to continue.

After a 4-6 hour stint of no vomiting you can restart with small amounts of the bland diet then move on to your normal diet.

(3)Probiotics shorten the course of gastroenteritis- these can be obtained on their own or in foods such as yogurts.
You may want to consider purchasing these.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
