What Causes Vasodilation, Low Blood Pressure And Lightheadedness After Hot Bath?

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Jul 2015
Question: Felt bad since Monday evening. Lightheaded after a hot soaking bath which was proceeded by a moderately strenuous hike up above my place. I immediately went to bed. My resting BP has always been on the low side, systolic just above 100 and lower when feeling bad in Florida. I am at 5100' now for summer but have not had issues until now. I have been taking alendronate 70mg on Sunday mornings and usually can count on a stomach uncomfortableness. After reading some reports of tachycardia, etc, I will DC until further consultation with primary in September.

Brief Answer:
Can be a result of hot bath

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Hot bath can lead to vasodilation, low blood pressure and lightheadedness. The fact you take Alendronate can worsen above mentioned symptoms.
I would advise you not to worry, take much fluids and symptoms will disappear gradually.

I assumed that the hot bath precipated vasodilation and initial symptoms. Now two days later , I am awaiting feeling better. Just had BP taken : 130/95 which is high for me as mentioned. My pulse is steady at 80/minute and my normal low altitude pulse is 72/.
I am going to increase protein and fluid intake. I need to work harder to build the muscle mass ( never had much).
As my primary prescribed Fosamax and I am discontinuing, would you be aware of a bisphosphanate that has been shown not to have the aforementioned side effects?
Thank you doctor.

Brief Answer:
Welcome back

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

I would advise you not to exercise hard until you feel well. It may take couple of days until full recovery. If you measure high blood pressure try to decrease the amount of salt intake.
Usually all bisphosphonates has similar side effects. And if you decided to discontinue your medication, I would advise you to think carefully and discuss it with your doctor. In most cases the benefit from these medications are more than side effects, so you should think carefully before discontinuing.
