Question: I have had a vaginal discharge and the swab came back and I am being treated with Amoxycillin. I am now having bleeding and pain on intercourse with my partner. Is something else causing this reaction?

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
It could be the infection itself that is leading to friction and bleeding / pain during sex.
It is best to abstain till you complete the course.
If , after finishing the antibiotics, you still have these symptoms, please consult your gynecologist.
At 56, I assume you are menopausal.
Due to local estrogen deficiency, the vaginal tissues become thinned out and atrophic, this is called atrophic vaginitis.
The mucosa becomes delicate, friable, breaks easily , leading to spotting and pain.
A thorough internal exam - per vaginum and per speculum should be done to diagnose this.
A pelvic transvaginal scan will rule out any polyps / fibroids / other causes.
Use enough lubrication during sex.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.
