What Causes Unintentional Weight Fluctuations?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: My weight has been fluctuating a lot. I eat normally, maybe almost unhealthy, I don't exercise & I have went from 135 lbs to 119 lbs. I am 5ft 3in. I feel disgustingly tiny and no matter how much I eat, I won't gain weight. I've recently had blood drawn to determine if I have thyroid issues waiting on results. What can I do to help myself gain my weight back?

Brief Answer:
Weight

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry to learn about your unintentional weight fluctuations.

This requires a thorough evaluation. It was a good idea to have your thyroid tested. The results will give important information regarding your thyroid status. For example, an over-active thyroid can cause weight loss despite an increase in appetite.

However there are several other reasons for weight loss. So a comprehensive assessment is necessary. When I see someone like you, I order the following tests in addition to a physical examination:

CBC
ESR
TSH
Free T4
Glucose
Electrolytes
Calcium
Liver function tests
Kidney function tests

For instance, uncontrolled diabetes can cause weight loss too

Further tests are considered based on findings on physical examination.
