What Causes Twitching On One Side Of Cheek?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Mar 2015
Question: Good afternoon Dr. Rynne,

Last night I noticed my right cheek was twitching. I haven't been getting enough sleep lately(some days only 4 hours). I did wake up with a red mark on that cheek yesterday morning with a tight u shaped thin cut in the center. I have no idea how that happened. It appears there is some very slight swelling of the cheek too. I put some calamine lotion on it last night, and had some itching off, and on this morning(not itching now). Almost two weeks ago I had a precancerous mark treated (frozen), just above the other red mark. Is this something to worry about?

Thank you, XXXXXXX S.

Brief Answer:
The present mark is not related to previous precancerous mark. Relax.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the mark over the cheek and related sensation over the same.

After the analysis of the query and the description of the evolution of the condition, let me reassure you first that there is nothing to be worried about and the mark is not related to previous precancerous mark. It is just coincidental that you got the present mark just near the previous one.

In general such kind of marks appear due to any insect bite or due to mild friction or scratching during sleep. As you noticed it just after waking up so it is quite possible to get it scratched mildly. It gets healed quite early and the sensation of irritation or itching vanishes off.

I reassure you fully that there is no relation of present condition with the previous precancerous mark. I further suggest you to not to pinch or pop or repeatedly touch the area as can get further inflamed.

With regards,

Hi Doctor Kanodia,

I was more concerned about the twitching cheek. It is under the right cheek bone in the same area as the red mark. I've had twitching eyelids several times in the past when I've been tired, but the twitching has gone away with rest. I have been on pravastatin drugs (20 mg), but have stopped taking them for several months now because of muscle, and joint pain in my hands(as per my doctors orders). He is going to prescribe a lower dosage next week. I'm worried the twitching is permanent.

Thank you, XXXXXXX S.

Brief Answer:
I reassure you fully that the twitching sensation is not permanent.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Welcome back to the forum and thanks a lot for your further follow up with details.

For your concern regarding twitching: It is quite common to find twitching sensation especially over face area. Though twitching can occur at any part of body but face is supplied with more nerves so there can be more tendency for the same.

To tell you more about twitching sensation in simple words: it is due to slightly oversensitivity of nerves. It can occur in deficiency sates of vitamin B12 in particular or due to more anxiety and stress states or even normally in old age. To reassure you more, twitching is not a sign of any grave condition and is quite a normal thing in our practice.

I reassure you fully that the twitching sensation is not permanent and would be alright in short period of time. Try to relax yourself and do not take more stress.

I hope this information will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

"Wish you good health"

Regards,
