What Causes Twitching And Swelling In Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Mar 2016
Question: Goodmorning.
Last evening my 25 year old daughter experienced tingling in her left eye. Soon after, the bottom lid filled with fluid to the point it sagged low, exposing the pink inner lid membrane. It was accompanied by no pain, itch or irritation. She went to sleep and awoke to markedly reduced swelling. Just a bit of the sag/swell remains. As we talked about it this a.m., she remembered both eyes have been twitching the last week or so, which she attributed to stress (work related). She also tends to break-out in hives during periods of stress, but that has not happened recently. She has noticed an increase in stomach acid. She considered taking a Benadryl last night but could not find any in my medicine cabinet. She is visiting from out of town and fly's home today.
Thanks you for your opinion and suggestions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Appreciate your concern for your daughter.
There's nothing to worry. The twitching of the eyes is myokimia, a benign condition which may be associated with stress and tiredness. The swelling she had was probably angioedema, something similar to hives but not associated with itching. It may be due to allergy to something with which she came into contact. Such swelling can occur in the lips, tongue etc. It's dangerous if it occurs in the throat which can block air passage and needs an ER visit.
