What Causes Twisting And Inability To Bear Weight On Leg After An Injury?

Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: Greetings,

I injured my knee April 18th at the gym. I had a baby 3 months ago and was going through a fit test where I had to jump off a block into a squat I fell down into the squat and my knee twisted and I fell to the ground. I sat bending the knee while the trainer looked at it he said it seemed nothing was broken. I got up but when I tried to walk my knee felt as if it was twisting and could not support me . I hoped to a seat until the ambulance came. I went to th ER and was examined and X-rays were taken. I was told I had no broken bones. I was given a stabilizer, crutches and ibuprofen. Most of the swelling has reduced , I followed RICE and have begun some exercises (leg lifts , foot slides) they are getting easier to do. However when I attempt to bear weight for walking I feel like my leg wants bend and not support me. As it were held by a rubber band it feel "springy". I can't sit with my feet on the ground, I just am scared to take steps and injur myself further.I don't have insurance so I'm wondering if I should give it time. Is it normal to feel the "spring like " feeling and I should push through? The hospital did not provide me with a time as to when to go to the ortho.

Thank you , XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Internal knee injury likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The feeling of twisting and inability to bear weight on the leg is suggestive of an internal knee injury. You could have injured menisci or ligaments inside the knee. You might benefit by consulting your orthopedician who can examine you , and order a Knee MRI to know the exact cause and provide the proper treatment for it.
A pair of knee supports can add to stability. But that again depends on your exact condition. If you don't get relief, proceed with MRI.
I hope this answers your query.

I couldn't get an appointment until XXXXXXX and I want to have an estimate of when I should attempt to take steps with the foot. Right now I don't bear weight on the foot when walking .Additionally , could you respond to what feelings and sensations may be normal in a foot after being non weight bearing .

Brief Answer:
Be non weight bearing for 6 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It is best to be non weight bearing for at least 6 weeks for any injury to heal inside the knee. In case there is excessive swelling then a hemarthrosis needs to be ruled out. You may have mild tingling or numbness in the foot due to minor nerve compression at the level of knee due to swelling.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thank you that was helpful . I attempted to take some steps lightly bearing weight on the foot and it seems to be holding up. The tingling feeling is diminishing as I do the motion excercises. This is my first injury and it was quite scary. I will not bear full weight until the 6 weeks if that is what is needed.

Brief Answer:
Rest is necessary for proper healing.

Detailed Answer:
Avoiding bearing weight on the injured knee will help in an early healing. You can use a pair of knee supports also for an extra support to the knee.

Will do , I have a 3 month old baby so it has been hard . I wear my brace for most of the day. Except for about 3-4 hours a day. It really does help. Thank you so much. I'm trying to eat foods that will aid joints and ligaments and it seems to be helping although it's only been 10 days. I feel drastic improvement . I will be patient.
