Question: hello, I'm very worried, I'm a student and regretfully i had a one night stand, but i used protection but then i noticed the the guy took the condom off for a couple of minuets, but soon as i noticed i stopped. it's three weeks after now and i developed a sore case of tonsillitis and developed white bits on both my tonsils and a little rash that went in a couple of days, and after reading the internet I'm so worried that I've got HIV!!! is three weeks too early to have symptoms. i went to the doctor to sort out my tonsillitis and she gave me medicine straight away and then the tonsillitis went in a couple of days would HIV tonsillitis go with medication? please help!

Brief Answer:
HIV associated sore throat does not respond to common medication

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The risk associated with a condom malfunction during vaginal intercourse is 4 in 10000 or 0.04 percent.

2. However you must get tested for HIV for your safety. You can do either
(i) Rapid 4th generation HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies test and p24 antigen test after 1 month

or

(ii) ELISA third generation HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies test at 3 months and 6 months.

3. Rapid 4th generation test is widely done in the US presently and is accurate after 1 month.

4. HIV symptoms might appear as an acute illness after 2 to 4 weeks after HIV infection and shows symptoms like fever, sore throat and mouth, lymph node enlargement, pharyngitis, rash or weakness. It does not improve over few days and worsens with time. It does not respond to the usual medication.

5. It is possible that you might have got a viral flu or mild bacterial infection.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
