What Causes Swollen Lumps Between Groin And Leg?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Dec 2015
Question: About 17 days ago I felt two swollen lumps between my groin and my leg.

I visited the GP and he said they were swollen lymph nodes. He said they were nothing to worry about but booked me in for an ultrasound.

I have no symptoms of infections but I remember my groin feeling tender the day before I spotted them. They are painless.

The lumps are oval in shape and smooth. They seem to connect to each other at the tip but I can feel the two distinct lumps, I can’t tell if they are connected 100%. They are not rock hard, but I wouldn't call them soft. They do feel rubbery. Both are very movable. One is about 0.8cm and the other is 1.2cm, but that’s just by feel. The large one seems of gotten harder over time but I don’t think it’s gotten bigger.

Both are very moveable.

I'm a 34 male and have no other symptoms or health problems.

I’ve have been prodding them to check size which I'm pretty sure isn't helping.

Kind regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Enlarged lymph nodes in the groin

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The enlarged lymph nodes in the groin is suggestive of an infection in the same region. The area should be examined. Possibility of an STD should be ruled out with proper history and physical exam which I am positive your GP did so. If Tylenol, NSAIDs and hot compress do not lead to resolution then an ultrasound is a good idea. Herniation is also common in this area and can be confused with lymph nodes. The ultrasound will make the diagnosis much clear. Soft nodes in the groin area are common and if they remain enlarge even after empirically treating with antibiotics and NSAIDs then FNAC / excisional lymph node biopsy should be considered in consult with your doctor. Most likely that wont be needed as the majority of such node swelling is due to a viral infection or allergy or non specific inflammation and subsides within two weeks.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

When feeling the node what is the difference between soft and hard?

How common is it to have an infection and not know about it? They have been swollen for 17 days.

The two nodes are close together with a 2mm gap between the two, would this class as matted?

Hello again.

Its a subjective experience mostly and can give clues but physical examination alone is never used to conclude the final diagnosis.

In general, warm, tender and fluctuant nodes indicate lymphadenitis. Fixed, firm, non tender and matted nodes indicate malignancy.

Subclinical infections are common. However , 17 days is a longer duration thus an ultrasound is the way to go for now.

No, they aren't matted. Matted nodes are adherent to each other.

Thanks.

I'm super anxious about the Nodes and have been feeling them a lot, how likely is this too prolong the swelling?

How do you measure them? The 1.2cm one is a bit longer, I've measured it from the short diameter.

They are very XXXXXXX is this a good sign?

Hello again.

I appreciate your concern and am sorry for your distress.

Its normal to be anxious especially after reading the possibilities. Based on your description, I am positive that it wont be a serious cause.

Exact measurement is possible only on ultrasound. There is no need to find the exact measurement or to feel them repeatedly. The size and consistency assessment, as mentioned earlier are also dependent on the subjective analysis and experience of the physician.

Yes, mobility is a good sign. Fixation is not a good sign.

Let me know if you have any query

Best of luck.

Thanks

It been a few days, I'm seeing a GP tomorrow but I'm again having major anxiety that I have cancer. I can't help googling the symptoms, which I know I shouldn't do, and it driving me crazy.

What makes you think this is not a serious case?

When the nodes are tender would you 100% feel them? I remember my groin being a bit tender the day before I felt them but they've never been tender when I touch them. I also had a shore throat and felt a little weak the day before I spotted them but it went away after a day.

Hello again.

Symptoms alone are not a reliable source unless one is investigated especially with regards to malignancy. Searching and fitting symptomatology , alone is a useless exercise and would fuel your anxiety, further.

When the nodes are tender, they would bother you and be painful when touched. They cant go un noticed. The infection site is quite far from the groin and its unlikely that it was related to the sore throat though infection /inflammation can lead to lymphadenopathy response from such sites in the body.

The non fixation, no matting, non adherent nodes plus your GPs opinion point towards a positive outcome. However, its a general opinion and one would be in a better position to exclude the diagnosis based on confirmatory investigations.

In my personal opinion, Just try to relax. I hope you overcome your anxiety and have good news at the end.

Wishing you best of health

Final questions!

It feels like one of the nodes has gone down in size and got softer a bit in time while the other has gotten harder. Is this natural?

The larger node feels flat, both feel smooth with natural oval shapes. I assume this is a good sign?

Thanks for all your help.

Hello again.

The one that has reduced in size according to you and the other changing consistency is probably a good sign as it shows that there is regression rather than progression or fixed nodes with no changes. Then again, I would re emphasize that lymph node examination ,even by an experienced doctor, can at best give clues only. One can not base treatment decisions alone on the consistency of the nodes.

Thanks.
