Question: My 9-year old daughter's chin is swollen and there is a large, hard knot that I can feel under the skin. It has grown over the last two days from just a small area localized to just below her bottom lip to now including the width of her bottom lip, encompassing the whole chin; front and underneath. The pain is controlled with Motrin but if she gets hit in the area it is difficult to sooth her. There is no visible pimple or anything of the sort, just redness which has progressed over the last 36 hours. The swelling has changed the look of her face, both frontally and strikingly in her profile. She has difficulty forming her words due to the swelling and inability to freely move her bottom lip. I worry this may be an abscess but not sure which type of doc to take her to...an endodontist, dentist (she complained of tooth pain (I think that is secondary to the problem), or just the emergency room. Any advice?
