default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: My daughter is 24 she just showed me an area on her right upper chest below the clavicle region but above the breast that is swollen or appears to be protruding more than the left side. What could this be? I am an xray technologist and I have done xrays of the chest before on patients with similar symptoms but the xrays were negative.

she also states she has itching on her upper chest and neck area but I don't know if its related

Brief Answer:
Please give feedback of the details asked for

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

Noted the history related to your daughter.
To recapitulate: Female/'24 - swelling just below clavicle but above breast - protruding - itching upper chest and neck area.

The most probable cause may then be an insect bite or so if the history is very recent.
If the history is of a longer duration of say days or weeks or more, this may be costochondritis in the said area or a cyst or a mass from the structures below.

Please provide me few details for me to assist you better:
Since when is the swelling?
Any pain or tenderness?
Is the swelling well defined or diffuse (unable to find the edge)?
Any pain on touch or pressure.
What is the color of the skin above.
Is the swelling XXXXXXX or can not move?
Any other information?

Please post a clear photograph if possible.

I would advise you to have a clinical evaluation, actual physical examination and investigations like ultrasonography or CT scan if indicated.

I hope this answer helps you to get her an early diagnosis and proper treatment.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Hi Dr Chandrakant
The skin is of normal color. She noticed it only a couple of days ago. There is no associated pain. The swelling or protrusion seems to be inferior to the sc joint. After posting the question I began to notice that the right side of my chest in the same area protrudes more than the left which leads me to believe it is of normal anatomy. It is below the SC joint so I believe it is upper rib area.

Brief Answer:
Thanks for your feedback - keep under observation.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback and I would go by your observations and inferences.

If there is no problem at the moment, keep the area under close observation.
I think you both must be right handed (dominant hand) and hence the comparative movement at right SC joint and the joints of the ribs with sternum will be subjected to more strain as compared to the left side - a possible explanation.
