Brief Answer:
Can be a hernia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.noted your history of swelling in groin which goes away at night.
A simple test will help to differentiate this.
Please see if the swelling increases on coughing or straining of any sort and reduces or vanishes on pressing upon it.
This is called impulse on coughing and is classical of a hernia.
If this test is not positive then the diagnosis needs to be done by the following:
Clinical evaluation, preferably by a General Surgeon.
Ultrasonography and color Doppler examination
To get an appropriate diagnosis and a plan for further management.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

The area does hurt more if I cough or strain. Could this problem go away with time? What could happen if I do nothing. I have advanced parkinson's disease and I am going in to have a Doupa unit installed on Feb 29, should I try to get this taken care of now or could I wait and have it taken care of after the operation. I'm still hoping that it will just go away, I had this as a child and I have had 2 reocurances over the past 65 yrs although I have not had one in about 30years

Brief Answer:
Please get this diagnosed as early as possible.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
If the area does hurt more if you cough or strain this is the right time to get it diagnosed correctly as you have recurrence after a long time. What can happen depends upon the diagnosis.
Please take care now.
I hope you would agree with me.
