What Causes Swelling And Redness On Feet?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Jun 2015
Question: I'm a professional troubleshooeter ... but for electronics not people. My friend's feet are chronically swollen about 10%, and have a red color all over his feet, and up both legs, tapering off to normal a few inches below the knee. It has been that way for over a year. his doctor has not been able to figure it out .. and at the moment is treating him with a powerful fungus/bacteria killer which also inhibits the immune system somewhat. Previously it was thought an old spinal injury might be to blame...but no one has made any progress on it really. I am suspicious an old soccer injury might have something to do with it. he was kicked in one leg by an opponent many years ago. Aren't there some valves in one's leg veins that allow the blood to flow only in one direction? The clue to this (to me ) is that both legs look about the same. would this suggest the issue is somewhere above the crotch? Please advise.. he's been my buddy since high school. He's 61 now, and I am 55 ... I don't want to see his condition get worse.

Brief Answer:
Redness could be due to Cellulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like he has developed Cellulitis, infection of skin and subcutaneous tissue in his lower limb. That's why he has been given Antibiotic.
Diseases of valves in the veins will cause Varicose veins with prominent veins in the lower limb.
In my opinion, your friend might be having Chronic Lymphoedema of the lower limb , which gets infected On and off leading to redness.I prescribe Antibiotic like Clindamycin capsule along with anti inflammatory tablet to my patients with similar complaints. Colour doppler of the affected lower limb has to be done to know the exact diagnosis and to rule our Venous disease.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
If you come back after Colour doppler study,I will explain.
Nothing to worry.
Wish him good health.
Regards
