What Causes Sudden Unconsciousness Followed By Vomiting, Weakness, Nausea And Severe Headache?

default
Posted on Fri, 29 Apr 2016
Question: My friend passed out while sitting at her desk. lost consciousness then was weak and went to the bathroom and vomited. Couldnt stand up for about 10 minutes. nausea remained for several hours. this morning she is still weak and had a severe headache. no fever so far pulse and blood pressure normal. I am concerned about the blacking out. The last time she vomited was when she was in severe pain form her back. Her back was hurting more than usual yesterday. Appreciate any suggestions.

Brief Answer:
If she actually went unconscious then, would've been good to be seen in ER

Detailed Answer:
Good afternoon. Thank you for your concern FOR YOUR FRIEND. If she actually went unconscious AT HER DESK and then, vomited after awakening I think she should've been seen immediately at the emergency room. A presentation like that could be anything from seizures to a cardiac arrhythmia or even a TIA (ministroke). It sounds as if she regained consciousness rather quickly otherwise I'm sure you would've sounded the alarm right there and then, however, again, if she actually lost consciousness then, that is a very abnormal sequence of events to occur from perfectly fine. Of course, you don't really know how "normal" she was prior to passing out at her desk but suffice it to say..even if she had been feeling badly all day long..perhaps, she took medication and because of this passed out....even more reason to get to the ER so they can run tests on the blood and discover if she is using any type of toxic or illicit substance even to control pain that needs to be ferreted out.

I hope this addresses your initial concerns and that you'll keep me in mind for future questions regarding these or other neurological/medical issues. Feel free to upload images if you'd like

Otherwise, I'd appreciate your rating this interaction with a HIGH STAR SCORE and look forward to a few words of feedback. In addition, I'd appreciate your CLOSING THIS QUERY if you're satisfied with my response.
