Question: can a bladder infection cause sudden memory loss? .In ER yesterday w/loss of memory. Diagnosed w/bladder infection. Memory loss lasted for 4-5 hrs. Have no burning or urgency w/bladder. Given Cipro. Had cat scan to rule out stroke. Memory of yesterday has not returned. Have IC for past 20 years.

I have noted the details. It is unlikely that the transient memory loss was caused due to bladder infection.

The symptoms are suggestive of transient global amnesia (TGA), a type of minor brain stroke, also called as TIA (transient ischemic attack, where the symptoms recover in less than 24 hours).

Evaluation should include MRI and MR angiogram of brain, lipid and homocysteine levels.

You should be on aspirin tablets until the evaluation is complete.
